Dear LA Family,

We sincerely regret any inconvenience that you may have experienced by the unfortunate cancellation of Teknowledge's Circular Logic event in Los Angeles this past weekend. 3B was more than ready to throw down a wicked set for the LA heads that night and was equally disappointed to learn that the event had been shut down. His thoughts are with the SI crew during what must be a very difficult time for them.

The promoters of Circular Logic, Teknowledge Events, have issued public apologies to ticket purchasers for the March 1st Circular Logic event in downtown LA, with some information about how to go about obtaining a refund if you bought your tickets online via GrooveTickets prior to the show. We wanted to forward that info (and some links) along to you all ... please note that, according to the promoters, there is currently no stated means for obtaining a refund if you purchased tix at the door.

Unless you live on your island, with ample resources and no need for the outside world then this does not apply to you. Otherwise keep reading...Oil has gone up to $103.00 a barrel.

They call it 'Stagflation', I call it the beginning of Armageddon. I look forward to 'our' great depression, I look forward to this time when everything comes into perspective. When all this talk about 'tribe' and 'family' really starts beginning to mean something.

Why do I bring up the price of oil? why do I mention 'tribalism'? The price of wheat has doubled...looks like Atkins might work out by default.

Maybe I read the news too much, maybe I worry too much, maybe I care too much. Maybe I'm just crazy, but before it gets any better, it's gonna get worse. And sometimes, sometimes it's gotta be that way. This game we play on a daily, this game we call 'life' is one big cosmic dice throw. If one were so inclined to believe that the universe itself were a thing onto itself, a thing with intelligence, then such a thing is "cool , vast, and unsympathetic." for humanity in comparison to the larger picture is but a blip on the radar screen. Roaches will out live us as a species.

So why are we so fucking special? is it the gift of narcissism? for we all are narcissistic in one way or another...we only put our best pictures up do we not? I do. Why would I put a picture up of myself taking a shit? that's not sexy. catch my drift.

Sexiness is over fucking rated.

Tough times are coming, but it is tough people who endure.

There's all this talk about 2012...to hell with prophecy, I will concern myself with this world that we live in, that we have created. this is our charge and our doing. The idea that somehow, someway it will change for whatever reason outside of any action besides our own is bullshit. You don't think Aztec royalty weren't as corrupt as anyone else in power, you think because they were indigenous beings with a naturalistic philosophy that was in tune with the earth that it exempts them from corruption??? they were human too...it's all systems of control. And Human sacrifice is a damn good way to keep folks in line.

Tell you what...come 2012 and my back starts burning, then I'll say I was wrong, but until then...it's up to us.

It's like we are standing there seeing the punch coming with our hands tied behind our backs.

Two of my favorite bands I will quote: Marilyn Manson: "Without the threat of death There's no reason to live at all"
Queens of The Stone Age: "But I want something good to die for, To make it beautiful to live."
This is our generations impasse, we are it folks, this is our charge. It is our time. it is the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Mind Bombin' | Album Review By BijouBreaks

Ahhhhhhh yeahhhhhhh .... BijouBreaks just posted a **wicked** review of 3B's debut album, Mind Bombin':

_____________________________

Artist: BreakBeatBuddha
Title: Mind Bombin’
Format: Unmixed CD
Label: Independent

Mind Bombin’ is a nice mixture of glitchy breaks and heavy down-tempo with some good guest vocals/ MC work mixed over a sonic palette that very much leans towards the low end. The tracks here ooze with ridiculously hefty bass and beats that completely embrace the digital realm of musical expression and totally ignore convention when melding their influences. I mean seriously, in theory it’s easy to think that combining hip-hop, dancehall, IDM glitch, digital funk, down-tempo and breakbeats would work, but in execution it’s no small feat. And 3B makes it look silly easy here.

BreakbeatBuddha’s latest offering is a great attempt at interjecting a bit of social awareness into the dance scene via breakbeat and come-down-tempo. Mind Bombin’ presents the ideals of collective consciousness to crowds who, let’s be honest here, sometimes have a difficult time even grasping its simpler, more marketable little brother – PLUR. But too few have made the effort to positively influence dance culture and 3B has to be applauded in this regard.

The point here is made with a solid musical backdrop and playfully accessible titles like ‘Buddha Bounce’ and ‘Sleezy Geeza’. The tracks ably blend a large array of influences (musical and otherwise) into one very cohesive thump, and on the dancefloor the outcome is more than a good effort - it’s a good time. As a whole, this album manifests its artists’ passions and lets the message mix with the music and makes them both bump.

Stand out tracks for this reviewer include:

1: Bounty Killa - Darker, trippier glitch with ragga stabs that work well. Oakland funk synth drops for the sickness on the exit.

2. Endurance (Featuring SHUGGA SHERM) - Busta Rhyme styled funk over heavy glitch. This is a headnodder of the highest order that’ll make you reach for the rasta gods with a quickness.

3. Dissent -A twisted experiment in relentless breakbeat glitch.

4. Devious (Featuring BLACK LIGHT) – Full MC rhymes over more subdued (emphasis on the sub) breaks. Probably one of the more accessible tracks on the album.

6. Mind Check (Featuring SOUL EYE) – Full MC work flowing over very smooth beats. The message got a groove.

Full Tracklisting:

1. Bounty Killa
2. Endurance (Featuring SHUGGA SHERM)
3. Dissent
4. Devious (Featuring BLACK LIGHT)
5. Buddha Bounce (BREAKBEATBUDDHA VS BASSNECTAR)
6. Mind Check (Featuring SOUL EYE)
7. Devious (Instrumental)
8. Straight Back
9. Sleezy Geeza
10. Delinquent Frequency
11. Skullduggery
12. Sleep Walker

Available at http://breakbeatbuddha.addictech.com/ or iTunes.

On Mind Bombin.....

I called the album "Mind Bombin" not because im blowin people minds. Its is an ode to my youth growing up on the streets of the UK as a Graffiti deviant and yet it reflects the shifts in my socio/spiritual political outlook as i made my way out of the streets to the west coast of America.

BOMBIN; A QUICK CRASH COURSE IN DEVIANCY.

"Bombin" is a term used to describe going out and painting illegaly on a wall, train or some other form of private property. Bombin is a kind of fugitive act, claiming your personal presence amongst a landscape dominated by control and ownership. My crew and i known locally as T.C.K. (The Creative Kings) would go out on early morning Bombin raids to paint our newly created artwork on some pristine wall. The rush and feeling of accomplishment was addictive (as was dodging police), pushing the boundaries and refusing to live under the rule of law. The word would spread and before too long other Graffiti artists would come and check your work, creating both notoriety and respect. I was amongst an underground network of renowned artists that included the likes of Goldie (the now Drum & Bass icon), Madtempa (TRS) and Desire (TWC) to name a few.
In hindsight being engaged in this form of subversive activity gave me chance to look at and challenge the way our actions are governed and controlled. Most of us tend to simply accept these laws, unconsciously being given our prompts in life from a governing agent. Without challenging and in some cases breaking these laws we have no chance of discovering our own parameters as human beings and the full extent of our power. Our city streets, for example, the space some of us choose to inhabit, do not belong to us but those who govern us. We are in fact alienated from our own surroundings and our connection to time, place and earth. Individuality and personal presence are kept to a minimum in favour of efficiency and speed. The act of "Bombin" reclaims your space within the city and turns that which alienates and subjugates you into your freedom and your platform for expression.

MIND; DO YOU OWN YOURS?

Last year i went to hear a talk given by Chuck D, Public Enemys front man at Standford University. It was all great but one thing he said stood out to me.....

"Mind is the new Real estate of the 21st Century".

That stopped me dead in my tracks. Our attention is constantly being pulled at and fought for. Even if it for a split second if they have your attention they have you. Corporations and companies are constantly looking to set up shop in our minds with extensive media campaigns that play with subtle and not so subtle subconscious drives. In the same way that our physical space is controlled so too is our psychic space. In this type of environment i believe it is more important than ever to create autonomy over our own minds. The Mind is the last bastion of individual freedom, physical space being subjugated to the rule of law. But the more we let these influences into our minds and shape our behavior the more we surrender our sovereignty over ourselves.

This album for me is no different from those early morning bombin raids but instead of a pristine wall the territory instead is that of "Mass Mind", our collective psychic body, a landscape which is becoming more and more controlled by big business and less about the individual. Its definitely not about "blowin peoples minds" (i mean, please, im not that cheesy) but if it does that for you.....wicked. Its about the individual fugitive act of reclaiming personal power in the face of forces which do not want you to discover the fullest extent of your power, but to tap into it, siphon it off and redirect it. The mind when focused, empty (you try emptying your mind) and calm has no limits. You can do anything, make anything happen....truly......

.....but how deep does the rabbit hole go?

Rediscovering Rebel Energy.

Here on the West Coast, we have a particularly unique situation and demographic of people. I'm specifically referencing this community of artists, activists, bohemians, spiritual practitioners, fashion designers and deviants of every shape and size. The freedom, openness, forward-thinking and rebellion of this community is the very reason I consider this community home. I have never before met a group of people so rich in talent that also embodies the intention and capacity to make positive changes on this planet. Yet, this potential to effect change, in my opinion, is unfocused and thereby ineffective. And so, I intend this message to serve as a call to action; to move forward from the constraint of apathy and truly consider the means for change. I also welcome your responses to the following essay and hope this will instigate open debate. Please contact me here or on my personal account hoodboy@zensearch.com.

REBEL ENERGY vs REBEL CHIC

Truly, we are custodians of "Rebel Culture". This culture originated in the efforts and sacrifices of those who have come before us; I speak, naturally, of the Civil Rights movements that precede us, including the Black Panther party, the Hippie movement and the student uprisings of the 60s, just to name a few. These movements, creations in response to the ills of their time, won freedoms for the community and stood as examples to the world of the "power of the People" over repressive government power.

Here we are, once again at a truly pivotal moment in history, where institutional power seeks to fortify its walls and strengthen its grip at the expense of the people of the world. Let us be reminded that Veitnam II is well and truly underway (we all love a
sequel; as if we can't learn our lesson first time round). Here we are, a community with this vast potential to make a change, to hold government and public conscioussness accountable and yet ...

....where is the movement, where is the change?

I am aware that, as an underground community, our movements are somewhat "covert" in nature. The mainstay of our
dissent goes relatively unseen and unacknowledged by society at large. And rightly so. The foundation and framework
to build a powerful movement that flies in the face of mainstream consciousness will need extensive preparations to maintain its off-the-grid approach. I know there are those out there who know what I mean. But there comes a point where our movements must leave the safety of the shadows and deploy within society at large.

PACIFISM, PEACE & CHANGE

Most of us within this community would like to believe that we are instrumental in creating change in our world. Many of us would cite the doctrine of Pacifism as our guide, wishing to approach societal change non-violently. I would argue, however, that the doctrine of Pacifism that we have accepted does more for social apathy and "sleepwalking" than serve to dismantle odious formations of power and control.

The doctrine of Pacifism, as exhibited by Dr. Martin Luther King for example, was successful, in part, because it was exercised against the backdrop of a more militant black nationalism: the Nation of Islam, when spearheaded by Malcolm X. This militant force demanded equality by the "ballot or the bullet". Under such a threat, institutional power of that era sided with the more civilized musings of a pacifist Christian movement.

Ghandi's "Ahimsa" also sought to pacify abusive power by drawing out the British Empire's abuse of power for the world to see, until it became so intolerable that no man could sit back and watch. Ghandi did this by confronting institutional violence head-on, without concern for himself. Although he did not directly attack his opponent with violence, he engaged the violence that was implicit in its formation and made it explicit. While it may be true that violence begets more violence, that does not mean that we should sit back and idly watch the current continuum of violence and the accompanying loss of freedom and civil rights perpetuate, so as to be free of violence in our own lives. I cite these examples to raise the question of what means will work within our particular era and society to effect change in our world. Ghandi's pacifism was designed specifically for its context and his people. The fact remains that it was a pacifism that did not yeild to power so as to avoid violent confrontation. It stood its ground and broke the law (law as idea, a collectively-agreed upon set of ideals to abide by in order to maintain a society).

CALLING A SPADE A SPADE ...

Both Ghandhi and Reverend King knew that the only way to change the face of power was to confront and threaten it. They knew that to change the law, they had to break the law. With non-violent means, they threatened the law and thereby stood as a threat to prevailing formations of power. Their "brand" of pacifism was mobilized and, one could even say that it was aggressively actualized. The brand of pacifism we see in this culture and, closer to home, within our own community, does nothing to pacify power ... it is us who are pacified. Why would we want to change anything? We are comfortable with the way things are. As long as we point towards a sentiment of rebellion, we can satisfy adolescent cravings to be cool and to be part of some revolutionary underground, exhibiting revolutionary chic, performing a kind of revolutionary theatre without risk to ourselves. This community has the potential to be the revolutionary underground movement of our times, but I'm a bit wary of its true underpinnings; At the moment, our community seems more like a party in your parents backyard, comfortable and protected from the horrific realities outside, than a mobilized movement for change.

Please don't misunderstand; I am not saying that we should all go out and bomb the White House. I am merely sharing my understanding and interpretation of what has worked and what did not. With that said, I do believe violence may be a tool that could assists in our struggle, if we are serious about changing the structure and composition of power. Therefore, we should be open to using it within in the right context. Again, I am drawing the distinction between a cosmetic revolution, as opposed to changing the way we think, relate, act, react and the structure of society.

OUR LEGACY OF DISSENT

Ironically, I feel that the cosmetic sentiments toward revolution has actually attracted us and brought us together ... we all share a similar resonance. But I also feel that those cosmetic sentiments stand to scupper and dissolve any real movement focused on change. They are not substantial enough to carry us through and, in fact, at their core, are divisive to any real radical momentum. They have served their purpose, but cannot be the sole focus of our attention ... that is, if we are are serious about change. I believe that, if we can really unify and mobilize as a group and as a family, we could offer something beautiful to the world and reinvigorate the legacy of dissent which has been bequeathed to us. This legacy needs to be exercised and practiced if it is to continue to exist. We, as part of this community, are the direct descendants of this lineage. We stand on the backs of those who came before us, which is both an honour and a challenge. Let us not be negligent of this, and let us honour the continuum and vow to keep it alive. Our freedom to celebrate has been fought for. If we do not give it full expression, i.e. if we limit it to a style, it shall die, denied of its true "Rebel Energy", a force that moves mountains, shakes crowds and topples empires.

BreakBeat Buddha @ The Silo Review

There are not many Katz in the Houston scene who actually play on Tribe. There is however another forum, Houston Beats, that many post event reviews on. Here are a few from the previous party at the Silo featuring BreakBeat Buddha and many favorite locals as well as special guest appearance from Lenky Don, Rebel Crew, visiting from NYC.
This is what they had to say...

“i had lots of fun and breakbeatbuddha was great. he gave me a free cd. ive been bumping the hell out of it. good stuff.”

“I missed the last show at the silo, and I sure as hell wasn't missing this one. Break beat buddha was slammin down some beats. I haven't danced that long and enjoyed myself that much in a long, long time. Thanks to anyone involved and I can't wait till the next one.”

“Tonight was the first time I was so distracted that I almost didn't take any pictures. That place is AWESOME, fuckin AWESOME!!! Driving into that field was surreal with the wind blowing like it was. The inside is just amazing. I really love it. Maybe it's the way the silo is constructed but the sound was awesome!! I love the feel of the place, the open area, the vendors, the bus I warmly chilled in for a while.... And oh what a reunion I had!!! That spot is the shit. Everyone was open. Rebel Crew was going off after Breakbeat Buddha, who was dope as hell himself. He let loose when he dropped "Slam" hehehe.”

My personal review, well, we can go with out saying that the Silo is an original spot that no matter what’s going on there, the setting alone just makes me smile. Riding out the storm the night before the party was fun as hell with some of the dopest, closest friends that I am always honored to work. Camp Silo was a trip with the crazy German, Harry, who later completely took over the RV, the kids from Dallas giving it their all and donating 3 days of their time, Pandora and the kid who was just dropped off out of no where….
As for the event it’s self, I was happy to see the bio diesel converters out there, the Dream Tellers, fresh picked Outpost Salad, and Zion’s Flame, you guys KICK ASS! I was so happy to have danced and hung out with you. Thanks for treating us to a lovely show of such gracefulness. We gunna talk about getting me some tools soon, k.
The music was super dope. Audio Telepathy played some tabala’s and sitar at sun down and I got to catch the first half of their set. Was a lovely transition in to the evening. Suma is one of my local music hero's. He’s played just about every one of our Outpost Parties. MAD Props!
And did you guy’s here my ‘break beat for dummy’s’ rendition? HEH! Man, I love humbling my self on stage. Was interesting spitting spoken word at midnight on the fly. Thanks to every one who was so supportive of my little impromptu mash up. Gotta do whacha gotta do! All in preparation for our guest headliner BreahBeat Buddha. I tell you, he got em on the dance floor and kept them there under his spell the entire set. Mah ass was right there with them breaking a sweat in some rather chilly winds. Every one was grateful to receive copies of his new album ~Mind Bombin~ as we kept things goen till 8 in the morning. Made for a great night and a magical morning bumping that Buddha Bass with a hooping session at sunrise. And what could be better than Sunday brunch and mimosas after such a wonderful 3 days…. Nothing. Life is good.

i love them deep, deep, rollin bumpin basslines, but jungle's drums are too spastic, i like to groove at midtempo. ole b.b.b. here does it great, esp. on "rebel;" roots manuva's "witness" is right on too (soundclip below). besides that i can't find anything. i know the stuff's out there -- i heard mr triple-b spin some himself -- who should i check out?
